Minority sub-quota scrapped: Govt to move SC

New Delhi, May 29, 2012: Law Minister Salman Khurshid on Tuesday said that the government would move the Supreme Court against a Andhra Pradesh High Court order scrapping 4.5 per cent minorities sub-quota.
A division bench of the AP High Court on Monday set aside the Centre’s decision to carve out a 4.5 per cent sub-quota for backward classes belonging to notified minorities from the 27 per cent OBC reservation, saying there was no rational behind creating a religion-based quota.
“The reservation for minority was done on the basis of Mandal commission. We would immediately go to Supreme Court by way of Special Leave Petition (SLP) against Andhra Pradesh High Court’s decision. Government is firm on sub quota for minority under OBC,” he said in a press conference on Tuesday.
Salman Khurshid said the reservation for minority was done on the basis of Mandal commission.

“The word minority in constitution is not just religious but also linguistic also. We haven’t made a reservation on religion alone. We have made it on proportion of backwards. It’s not political setback,” he added.
